The New Plymouth Girls' High School Careers Department provides career development assistance to students as well as support for parents / caregivers.
Career information, advice, guidance and counselling
Career development assistance is available to all students at all levels. Careers advice is provided by all staff but specialised careers guidance and Careers counselling is provided by appropriate Careers Department staff members.
Information is always available from the NPGHS Careers Department from Ms Kimiora Taite, our Careers Administrator. Whaea Kimiora can also put you in touch with the appropriate member of our Careers Team for specialized assistance..

Classroom subject curriculum programmes
Curriculum subjects contribute to the provision of relevant subject specific career development education information within subject areas taught in each students timetabled programme. Senior students still have the opportunity to enrol in timetabled STAR, Gateway or Trades Academy programmes as part of their timetabled subject programme.
STAR
Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource
STAR Classroom Programme's provide the opportunity for our senior students to explore specific vocational areas and gain NZQA qualifications. Availability is dependent on the vocational training courses we are able to access to meet student needs. We attempt to meet all student requests and a large range of specific career STAR exploration/training courses are available in a variety of vocational areas. STAR courses are available as short courses as well as a timetabled subject for senior students. STAR programmes enable students to investigate a variety of employment areas and to gain unit standard credits towards a qualification. University papers can also be studied.
Trades Academy
Tertiary Provider based Career Development Training
The Trades Academy programme allows students to begin their vocational training at WITT one date a week. The remainder of their learning occurs back at school. Senior students may enrol in Trades Academy programmes as a line in their timetable. Acceptance in the programme will involve students in vocational training one day a week at a tertiary provider e.g. WITT and PITA.
3+2 Career Training CAT
3+2 Career Training – CAT (YEAR 13 only)
The course is for students who want to begin vocational training e.g. at WITT or TOPEC, for a specific job area while still at school. Students will complete two days of their school week at Tertiary Institute studying in the area of their career choice. On the other three days of the week students are at school in timetabled classes including two 3+2 Career Training lines- usually Classroom based (CLB). In these classes’ students will complete generic unit standards AND catch up on work missed on their two days at the Tertiary Provider.
Study could be in the following areas of Level 3:
New Zealand Certificate in Cookery
National Certificate in Fitness (Exercise Consultant)
New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service
New Zealand Certificate in Makeup and Skincare (Introduction)
New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Experiences (TOPEC course)
Other courses to be confirmed by Tertiary Provider
This programme would occupy TWO lines of your timetable and TWO days a week attending a related course.
Gateway
Work Based Career Development Training
The Gateway programme enables senior students to begin workplace training and qualifications for a specific career area while still at school. Students on this programme are in the workplace up to one day a week and in their timetabled classes at school for the remainder of their studies. Senior students may enrol in the Gateway Programme as a subject in their timetabled school programme. This programme involves students in workplace training one day a week in the career area of their choice. Unit Standard credits towards a specific qualification in the students job area are gained. Gateway students attend school and their timetabled classes for the other four days of the week.
Engineering
Introduction to Engineering
Get a head start on your career in Engineering and experience engineering design and production with our fun and interactive taster courses. By enrolling in EE2E students’ study one morning a week in terms 1-3 to complete one paper towards the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE). Students will achieve 8 NCEA credits at Level 3. Designed for: Year 12 @ 13 Students who are competent in Physics and Maths, who are considering a diploma or degree in Engineering. This paper will cross credit into the diploma meaning students have one less paper to complete in their first year of full-time study. Students complete projects that have real life applications, such as building scale models to understanding how building materials perform in an earthquake situation.
