Bronte Heron (Year 10) wins major writing prize

Every year, the South Taranaki District Council
together with the district library system, run a writing competition to honour the memory of one of their most famous sons, the gothic author Ronald Hugh Morrieson. There are two categories - the first for secondary students who have some kind of link to the South Taranaki area (such as their parents are ratepayers); the second is a more open category for Taranaki writers generally.

Bronte Heron, 10BH, entered the secondary students group, and at an award ceremony held in Hawera on Friday 6 November, was declared the winner of the category, beating 77 other entrants ranging from years 9 - 13.

The judge, Tessa Duder, commented that it was rare for a boy-meets-girl formula'd story to appeal (or in this case, girl-meets-boy), but that Bronte's story had a genuine freshness of language and situation that revealed a distinct writing skill and ability.
