Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

Who We Are

The New Plymouth Girls’ High School Parent/Teachers Association is a group that meets several times a year (usually the third Tuesday of the month) in the Year 13 study. The PTA is a way of keeping parents informed about what going on at the school. This group is also used by the school as the main forum for consulting parents and getting feedback on issues and new initiatives. It is a great way to have say on matters that interest you.

Guest Speakers

At each meeting a guest speaker is invited and this is promoted through the website and through newsletters and e-mails from the school. Our speakers include staff that cover topics relevant to our school environment. We visit different areas of the school including the Hostel and learn about the organisational aspects and environment that our young women are educated in.

For 2016 we have planned five meeting dates and more subjects which we are sure will be of interest. We look forward to meeting parents and caregivers and welcoming you to these events.

School Updates

Every meeting our Principal, Jenny Ellis, updates the group on what is happening at the school, it is a opportunity to meet her and keep up to date, instead of relying on your daughter to keep you informed.

Fundraising

As a group the PTA is not required to fundraise. The School and The PTA jointly run two businesses, the Uniform Shop and the School Café. These businesses each have paid employees and a manager and are overseen by a joint PTA/School Management Committee. On the Board are the School Principal and Business Manager, the PTA Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary, and a Board of Trustees representative. All profits from these enterprises are returned to the school. The money is used to help fund Wai Ora, the Wellness Centre at school.

Parent Help

There are a few occasions during the year when volunteers from the PTA are encouraged to help out. These are serving dinner to staff at the Open Evening (approx 1 hour), serving drinks and nibbles at Year 13 Leavers afternoon tea (approx. 1 ½ hours), and arranging the flowers for the end of year Senior and Junior Prize-givings (again about 1 hour). . All these occasions are fairly relaxed and are a great way to get to know other parents. The parent help at these times is greatly appreciated by the school.
